At the suggestion of readers, I’ve tweaked our sidebar to make it more useful. There’s now a list of recent comments. I replaced the “Best Of” list of posts (which hardly anyone was clicking) with a list of “Top Posts”. Top Posts are the most-viewed posts over the past 24-48 hours, which typically includes but isn’t limited to the most recent posts. So now it’s much easier for you to see what everyone is reading and commenting on, which I hope will encourage more of you to join the conversation. And to keep the design clean and minimize redundancy, I dropped the list of recent posts and the list of recent tweets (since all our tweets do is announce new posts). Hope you like the changes, feedback always welcome.
I like it! I think it helps.
I always get to your posts via RSS feed and so am never on your root page and so never see the sidebar. It would be useful if you can get the sidebar to appear on your individual posts as well as just the main page. (I know this is technically possible in WordPress — not sure how much tweaking you’ll need to do with your theme…)
Good suggestion, but not sure we can tweak the theme enough to do that. Remember, I’m cheap.
This blog is hosted for free by WordPress.com, which limits the amount of tweaking I can do to the theme. But I’ll look into it.
Sorry, no can do.
Margaret – I’m in the same boat as you, and I just discovered that there is a separate RSS feed for comments (it requires a 2nd subscription). This works well. You can find the link near the top of the sidebar on the right of the home page.
