Short edition this week.

From Jeremy:

Some good non-academic career advice for ecologists and other academics.

The most obvious nerdy American Chopper meme.

  1. Non-academic career advice: Why not kill two birds w/ one stone? Learn how to invest for your retirement and learn alot about business by learning how to invest in stocks. There are several good books about the “buffet method” that cover the basics of financial statements and how to use them to find strong companies. If you windup in something like bioenergy, you’ll want to understand the basics of warrants, options, preferred shares and other types of market financing that might affect you or your company.

Also great to read some accessible books on economics (eg, Basic Economics, by Thomas Sowell; or Alan greenspan’s book). A broad general knowledge of Economics applies to every industry; its more useful in the long run than knowledge of a specific industry.
